Avocado Plants FAQ

What if my plant is not doing well after using the products?

We guarantee a 100% satisfaction! Our mission is to help you get happy plants.

If for some reason we fail to do this, just contact us via our help center or return your items hassle-free within 30 days.

Not convinced? Check out our Trustpilot reviews.

When do I need to re-feed?

The nutrients in SYBASoil will run out in ~6 months on average.

We will advice you on the right fertiliser after doing our plant scan.

When do I repot?

We recommend repotting once any of these things happen:

  • You see roots growing out of the bottom of the pot
  • The soil dries very quickly between watering
  • The plant is top-heavy and wants to fall over
  • Roots are pushing the plant up and out of the container
  • Every 1 to 2 years

What can I expect when using your products?

94.2% of customers report visibly stronger roots & leaf growth within a few weeks.

You will also notice that watering becomes a lot easier due to having the right soil structure.

Why is the soil peat-free?

We don't think peat is so neat!

It becomes too compact over time, leading to a state where it no longer absorbs water.

That's why we opt for coconut fiber and worm castings, keeping your potting soil delightfully airy and usable for much longer. Much more environmentally friendly in its use & less CO2!

How Do I Use the Ficus Mix as My Avocado Soil

Avocado soil that drains fast, stays airy, and still holds a steady film of moisture, that is exactly what our Ficus Mix delivers for young and mature avocado trees grown in containers. This blend keeps the root zone open, prevents compaction, and supports steady growth in bright indoor spots or sunny patios.

You can pot straight from the bag without additives, and you get a structure that helps prevent root rot while keeping nutrients available between waterings. Crafted to our specs at Sybotanica, it balances organic matter, mineral grit, and chunky particles so avocado roots can breathe, anchor, and explore.

How Does Ficus Mix Work for Avocado?

Below you will find each ingrediënt, exactly as used in our recipe, plus why it suits the vigorous, oxygen hungry roots of avocado.

  • 3,5 parts coco coir, forms a gentle moisture reservoir that stays fluffy as it dries. It evens out the wet to dry cycle, so Avocado soil does not swing from soggy to bone dry overnight. Coir resists compaction and helps roots keep fine airways for oxygen.
  • 1,5 parts worm castings, adds slow release nutrition and supports healthy microfauna. Castings enrich without burn and improve water retention in a controlled way, ideal for steady foliage and root activity between liquid feeds.
  • 2 parts coco husk chips, introduces chunky structure that holds permanent air pockets. The chips wick moisture and release it gradually, which suits avocado roots that want moisture around the root surface but dislike stalled water. They also keep the mix springy over time.
  • 2 parts perlite, boosts drainage and lightness. Perlite prevents the fine fraction from packing down after repeated waterings. In Avocado soil this ensures water moves through quickly, leaving behind a breathable root zone.
  • 0,5 part horticultural sand, adds mineral grit for faster percolation and better weight distribution. Sand helps roots anchor and creates micro channels that improve capillary movement, useful for woody root systems that value firmness and airflow.
  • Activated carbon, keeps the root zone fresh by binding impurities and moderating odors. It supports a stable environment for roots and microfauna, especially in containers where airflow is limited.
  • Lava gravel, contributes porous stone that stores tiny sips of water in its pores and returns them slowly to nearby roots. It also adds weight for pot stability and maintains open aeration pathways through the mix.
  • Organic nutrients, round out the recipe with gentle, plant available inputs that sustain foliage and root activity between fertiliser rounds. This supports steady growth without forcing soft, overly lush tissue.

Together, these components create what you want from Avocado soil, a loose, gritty texture with reliable but moderate moisture, strong drainage, and a balanced nutrition profile. You can top up with the same Ficus Mix at the next repot to keep performance consistent across seasons with Sybotanica quality.

The Original Habitat of Avocado

Avocado, native to Central America and southern Mexico, grows in bright, warm regions where seasonal rains soak the substrate and strong airflow dries it again. Soils tend to be well drained and mineral rich with organic litter that breaks down steadily.

Roots adapted to this rhythm prefer a medium that sheds excess water quickly, holds a thin film of moisture on particle surfaces, and keeps wide air spaces open. That is why the plant performs best in chunky Avocado soil rather than dense garden soil that compacts and suffocates roots in containers.

How to Care for Avocado Plants

Light: Provide bright light to full sun indoors near the sunniest window or outside in a sheltered spot. Aim for several hours of direct sun. If growth stalls or leaves pale, increase light gradually.

Water: Water thoroughly, then let the top few centimeters dry before watering again. In warm months you will water more often, in cool months less. With proper Avocado soil excess should drain quickly into the saucer, then you can empty it. If the pot stays heavy for days, increase drainage or check that the container has open holes.

Humidity and airflow: Normal indoor humidity is fine, airflow matters more. Keep foliage dust free so stomata can function and avoid cold drafts in winter.

Feeding: Use a balanced (liquid) indoor plant food during active growth, adjusting to your plant’s response. The worm castings and organic nutrients in your mix provide a solid baseline, so you do not need to add any fertiliser the first 6 months after repotting!

Pruning and shaping: Pinch soft tips to encourage branching and a stronger framework. Remove weak or crossing shoots. For balcony or patio specimens, keep a compact shape to balance canopy with root volume.

Repotting: Step up one size when roots circle the base or water rushes through too fast. Refresh with the same gritty mix to maintain structure. If water sits on the surface, gently rake the top layer to reopen air pathways or increase the fraction of perlite and sand at the next repot.

Pests and health: Inspect new growth and leaf undersides when you water. Good airflow and the right Avocado soil help prevent pests and keep roots resilient. If you ever overwater, allow the mix to reach the correct dryness before watering again and consider adding a little more mineral grit for faster rebound.
