ZZ Plants FAQ

What if my plant is not doing well after using the products?

We guarantee a 100% satisfaction! Our mission is to help you get happy plants.

If for some reason we fail to do this, just contact us via our help center or return your items hassle-free within 30 days.

Not convinced? Check out our Trustpilot reviews.

When do I need to re-feed?

The nutrients in SYBASoil will run out in ~6 months on average.

We will advice you on the right fertiliser after doing our plant scan.

When do I repot?

We recommend repotting once any of these things happen:

  • You see roots growing out of the bottom of the pot
  • The soil dries very quickly between watering
  • The plant is top-heavy and wants to fall over
  • Roots are pushing the plant up and out of the container
  • Every 1 to 2 years

What can I expect when using your products?

94.2% of customers report visibly stronger roots & leaf growth within a few weeks.

You will also notice that watering becomes a lot easier due to having the right soil structure.

Why is the soil peat-free?

We don't think peat is so neat!

It becomes too compact over time, leading to a state where it no longer absorbs water.

That's why we opt for coconut fiber and worm castings, keeping your potting soil delightfully airy and usable for much longer. Much more environmentally friendly in its use & less CO2!

🌱 The Perfect ZZ Plant Soil for Healthy Growth & Happy Plants

How Do I Use the Cacti & Succulent Mix as My ZZ Plant Soil

ZZ Plant Soil that drains fast and breathes easily, that is exactly what our Cacti and Succulent Mix delivers for Zamioculcas zamiifolia in homes and offices. This gritty, low retention blend keeps roots oxygen rich, prevents waterlogging, and supports the slow, steady rhythm that makes ZZ so dependable.

You can pot straight from the bag without additives, the structure helps prevent root rot while holding just enough moisture for sustained root activity. Crafted to our specs at Sybotanica, it balances a small organic fraction with pumice and perlite so rhizomes stay firm, leaves stay glossy, and watering stays simple.

How Does Cacti & Succulent Mix Work for ZZ Plant?

Below you will find each ingrediënt, exactly as used in our recipe, plus why it suits ZZ’s thick rhizomes, shallow roots, and drought tolerant habit.

  • 1,5 parts coco coir, forms a light, uniform base that stays springy as it dries. Coir evens the wet to dry cycle so ZZ Plant Soil does not swing from soggy to bone dry overnight. It resists compaction and keeps fine airways open so oxygen reaches the core of dense root zones.
  • 1 part worm castings, supplies gentle, slow release nutrition and supportive microfauna. Castings enrich the mix without burn, and add a small amount of water holding capacity. You keep leaves richly green without pushing soft, floppy growth.
  • 3,5 parts perlite, creates rapid drainage and long term porosity. The expanded particles hold permanent air pockets, which helps prevent root rot and stops the center of the pot from staying wet after watering. In ZZ Plant Soil this ensures water moves through quickly while air circulates freely.
  • 3 parts pumice, adds durable, heavier aeration that will not float. Porous rock stores tiny sips of water in micro pores and returns them slowly, perfect for long intervals between waterings. Pumice also adds weight for pot stability around tall stems.
  • 0,5 part horticultural sand, contributes mineral grit that speeds drainage and provides a firm bed for rhizomes. Sand builds micro channels for capillary movement, useful in wider pots where ZZ often spreads.
  • A little bit of activated carbon, which binds impurities and keeps the root zone fresh between long watering gaps. It supports a cleaner substrate environment for roots and microfauna in closed containers.
  • Little bit of lava gravel, maintains open aeration pathways and adds helpful mass so mature clumps do not tip. The porous stone holds trace moisture that slowly shares back to nearby roots.
  • Organic nutrients, round out the recipe with mild, plant available inputs that maintain color and steady growth without forcing soft, leggy tissue.

Together, these components create what you want from ZZ Plant Soil, a loose, gritty texture with very fast drainage, modest moisture retention, and a balanced nutrition profile that favors firm rhizomes and upright growth. You can top up with the same Cacti & Succulent Mix at the next re-pot to keep performance consistent across seasons with Sybotanica quality.

The Original Habitat of ZZ Plant

ZZ is native to eastern Africa where seasons swing between rain and drought. In that environment, roots grow through coarse debris, gravel, and sandy loam that shed water quickly, then dry with warm air and strong light. Moisture arrives in pulses, organic matter breaks down slowly, and air always has room to move around the root system.

That is why the plant avoids dense, peat heavy media and thrives in ZZ Plant Soil that is gritty, airy, and resistant to compaction. The habitat shaped a plant that prefers brief wet periods followed by long, gentle dries that keep rhizomes firm and healthy.

How to Care for ZZ Plant

Light: Give this plant bright, indirect light and a few hours of soft morning sun if possible. ZZ tolerates lower light, growth slows in dim rooms, so increase light gradually to encourage fuller stems and closer leaf spacing.

Water: Water thoroughly, then let the mix dry most of the way before watering again. In warm months you will water more often, in cool months much less. With proper ZZ Plant Soil excess should drain quickly into the saucer, then you can empty it. If the pot stays heavy, increase aeration or check that the drainage holes are clear.

Humidity and airflow: Normal indoor humidity is perfect. Prioritize airflow over misting. Keep leaves dust free so stomata can function and so the natural gloss shows.

Feeding: Use a balanced cactus plant food (liquid) during active growth. The worm castings in your ZZ Plant Soil provide a gentle baseline, so you do not need to add any fertiliser the first 6 months after repotting!

Pot choice and sizing: Choose a pot with large drainage holes. ZZ likes a slightly snug fit that dries predictably. Step up one size when you see roots circling the base or when water rushes through too fast.

Repotting rhythm: Refresh the top few centimeters with fresh mix each spring. Full repots are usually needed every 18 to 24 months, sooner if water begins to sit on the surface or if the clump becomes crowded with offsets.

Pruning and propagation: Remove yellowing leaves at the base with a clean cut. Divide rhizomes during repot, allow cut surfaces to callus before planting into dry mix, then wait several days before the first light watering.

Pests and health: Inspect leaf bases and undersides when you water. Good airflow and the right ZZ Plant Soil help prevent pests. If you accidentally overwater, allow the mix to dry to the correct level before watering again, then extend the interval or increase the mineral fraction at the next refresh.
