Root rot isn't just overwatering. It's what the roots sit in.

Lennart (@botanikbuddies) moved his plants out of soil and into SYBAStones. This is his set.

How it works

  1. Rinse the stones

A little dust forms during transport. Give the mix a rinse and it is ready to go.

  2. Clean the roots and plant

Wash all the old soil off the roots and plant into the self-watering pot. We email you the full method after your order.

  3. Fill the reservoir

Let the wick do the work. When the reservoir is empty, leave it a day or two so the roots get air, then refill.

How a self-watering pot works with SYBAStones

The pot in this image uses a rope wick. Some of our pots work without one: a built-in part of the pot reaches down into the reservoir and pulls the water up through the stones. Rope or pot structure, the result is the same.

Why root rot keeps coming back

Most potting soil is organic material. Over time it compacts into a dense, soggy block: water sits around the roots and they suffocate. That's root rot.
That same organic material is where fungus gnats lay their eggs. Sticky traps only catch the adults.

  • Pure mineral: pumice, zeolite and lava rock that stay open for years
  • Nothing organic in the pot to compact, rot or breed fungus gnats
  • Pair it with a self-watering pot and stop guessing when to water

Regular soil vs SYBAStones

Regular potting soil

  • Organic material that compacts
  • Breaks down over time
  • Fungus gnats breed in it
  • Guessing when to water
  • No guarantee
  • No care advice

SYBAStones

  • Pure mineral: pumice, zeolite and lava rock
  • Keeps its structure for years, and is reusable
  • Nothing for fungus gnats to breed in
  • Self-watering: you see the water level
  • 100% satisfaction guarantee
  • Support team with a plant biologist

Questions

What is SYBAStones?

SYBAStones is not soil. It is a mineral substrate: a blend of pumice, zeolite and lava rock that gives roots air, water and grip without breaking down. There is nothing organic in the pot to compact or rot, so the structure stays open for years. It is also reusable: rinse the stones and they are ready for the next plant.

Will I really not get fungus gnats?

Fungus gnats lay their eggs in organic material. There is none in SYBAStones: it is lava rock, pumice and zeolite, so there is nothing for them to breed in. The one thing that matters is the switch itself: wash every last bit of old soil off the roots, because that is where any existing eggs are.

How do I move a plant from soil to SYBAStones?

Rinse the stones, take all the old soil off the roots and plant into a self-watering pot. Growing on SYBAStones works differently from soil, so we send you a step-by-step email right after your order with the full method.

How do I water plants grown on SYBAStones?

Fill the reservoir of the self-watering pot and let the wick do the work. Let the reservoir run empty for a day or two before you refill, so the roots get air.
