Fair Production - Handmade in our social workplace

At Sybotanica we not only want to make plants happy, but people happy as well. In our production team we exclusively hire people with a distance from the workforce, and help them rehabilitate to the normal working life.

Take Peter for example:

Peter has been with Sybotanica since the 1st hour, and has now been promoted to head of production & a permanent contract! Where he was the first employee, he now manages a team of 3 production workers.

What makes this achievement even more impressive is that Peter achieved all this with only 10% visibility! 🕶️ With a few minor adjustments to his working environment, Peter is able to perform his job 100%.

Peter has now been through two moves and knows all the ins & outs of Sybotanica. He can even feel by the potting soil which variety it is. That's quite a challenge with 16 different mixes!

We are confident that Peter will keep production running smoothly in the coming years too! 💪

What is SYBAStones?

SYBAStones is not soil. It is a mineral substrate: a blend of pumice, zeolite and lava rock that gives roots air, water and grip without breaking down. There is nothing organic in the pot to compact or rot, so the structure stays open for years instead of turning into the dense, soggy block your plant was sitting in.

It is also reusable. Rinse the stones and they are ready for the next plant.

Why SYBAStones?

Because most houseplant trouble starts in the pot.

🪰 PESTS? Fungus gnats lay their eggs in organic material: soil, compost, peat. SYBAStones is pure mineral, so there is nothing in the pot for them to breed in. 100% fungus gnat free. Every single customer we surveyed said the same.

💧 WATERING? Paired with a self-watering pot you fill a reservoir instead of guessing whether the soil has dried out.

🌱 ROOTS? The mix stays open and airy, which helps reduce the risk of root rot from compacted, waterlogged soil.

♻️ REUSABLE? Rinse and reuse. The stones do not wear out.

How do I use SYBAStones?

Rinse the stones, take all the old soil off the roots, and plant into one of the self-watering pots in this bundle.

Growing on SYBAStones works differently from soil, so we send you a step-by-step email right after your order with the full method: how to clean the roots, how much water to add, and when to let the reservoir run dry.

Stuck anyway? Our support team includes a plant biologist, and yes, that is a real one.

How a self-watering pot works with SYBAStones

The pot in this image uses a rope wick. Some of our pots work without one: a built-in part of the pot reaches down into the reservoir and pulls the water up through the stones. Rope or pot structure, the result is the same.

"Fine, but does that actually add up to anything?"

Quick math.

Take one plant doing what plants do: a Ø15cm pot, then Ø18cm, then Ø21cm as it grows. That is 1.5L of substrate, then 3.1L, then 4.8L.

You do not buy that three times. You buy 1.5L to start, top up 1.6L at the first move and 1.7L at the second. 4.8L in total, so a single 5L bag carries that plant all the way through a Ø21cm pot. €12.99.

Minerals do not decompose, so the same stones keep going. Rinse them at every repot and put them straight back in around the roots.

Spread across the years the plant is actually with you, that one bag works out at €2.60 a year if you keep it five years, or €1.30 a year over ten. Ten plants, ten years: about €130 once, and you still own all of it.

The self-watering pots are reusable too. The plant food also goes a lot further than the bottle suggests: one 10ml scoop feeds 3L of substrate for 180 days, so a 300ml bottle covers 90 litres of substrate. For the Ø21cm pot above that is roughly 18 feeds, close to nine years, out of a single €11.99 bottle.

All in, keeping a mature plant in substrate and food on SYBAStones runs to under €3 a year.

"I have watered my plants the same way for years. Why change now?"

Because the hard part of watering is that you cannot see what is happening below the surface. You feel the top two centimetres, guess at the rest, and find out weeks later whether you guessed right.

A self-watering pot filled with SYBAStones takes the guessing out. You fill a reservoir. You can see the water level. When it is empty you leave it a day or two so the roots get air, then fill it again. That is the entire method.

It is not free, and we would rather say so up front: the first couple of weeks feel odd. You have to wash every trace of old soil off the roots when you switch, and you have to stop yourself watering from the top out of habit. One repotting session and one refill cycle and it stops being a new skill.

Then give the plant a few weeks to settle in, and this is where it gets interesting. The reservoir delivers the same amount of water every single day, which is the one thing hand-watering can never quite manage. Plants that were only ever growing in fits and starts tend to find a rhythm. 91.2% of the customers we surveyed saw stronger root and leaf growth within weeks, and 94.2% said watering got noticeably easier.

If keeping to a watering schedule was never your strong point, that consistency is the part you will feel most.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this bundle right for my plants?

This is the houseplant range: aroids, Monsteras, Philodendrons, Anthuriums, Calatheas, Marantas, Ficus, Alocasias, Dieffenbachia and similar. Use the Fine mix for thin-rooted plants and the Chunky mix for thick-rooted ones.

Cacti, succulents and orchids want something else. They have their own SYBAStones mixes, and they should not sit in a self-watering pot.

Will I really not get fungus gnats?

Fungus gnats lay their eggs in organic material. There is none in this pot: SYBAStones is lava rock, pumice and zeolite, so there is nothing for them to breed in.

The one thing that matters is the switch itself. Wash every last bit of old soil off the roots, because that is where any existing eggs are. Do that and the pot stays gnat free. 100% of the customers we surveyed reported no soil-based pests since moving to SYBAStones.

Do I need to rinse the stones before I use them?

Yes. A little dust forms during transport, which is completely normal. Give the mix a rinse and it is ready to go.

How do I move a plant from soil to SYBAStones?

Take all the old soil off the roots first, especially if you have had fungus gnats. Clean roots are the whole trick. A cutting grown in water can go straight into SYBAStones with no transition at all.

How do I water plants grown on SYBAStones?

Fill the reservoir of the self-watering pot and let the wick do the work. Let the reservoir run empty for a day or two before you refill, so the roots get air. We email you the full watering instructions after your order.

When do I need to feed my plants again?

The Tropical Slow-Release Plant Food in this bundle feeds for about 6 months. After that, feed again with a slow-release or hydroponics plant food made for mineral substrates. Organic plant food is not suitable, because there is no soil life in the pot to break it down.

When do I need to repot?

Much less often than in soil, because the substrate does not collapse. Move up a pot size when roots fill the pot and start circling the bottom, or when the plant gets top-heavy. Rinse the stones and they go straight into the bigger pot.

There is mould or a bad smell in my pot, what now?

Right after a switch that usually means one of three things: some old soil was left on the roots, the mix is sitting too wet, or a few roots are dying back from transplant shock.

Flush the pot through with water first. If it keeps coming back, lift the plant out and check the roots. Not every plant takes to a mineral substrate.

Do SYBAStones wear out or need replacing?

No. They are minerals, so they do not rot, compact or collapse the way soil does. Rinse them between plants and use the same stones again.

The only part with a working life is the plant food: about 180 days once it is in the pot. Store unopened bags closed and dry.

Are SYBAStones allergen free?

Yes. These mixes are allergen-free thanks to their stone-based composition.

How do I recycle the packaging?

Our bags can be recycled at your local plastic recycling point. You can also reuse them for storage, or keep a little substrate in them as a propagation box.

Can I return part of the bundle?

No, you can only return the full bundle. Check out our return policy here! Do note if anything is wrong we will always make sure you are satisfied!

Where can I read more about the products in this bundle?

Every item has its own page in the SYBAStones collection. Still stuck? Reach us at help.sybotanica.com, we like the challenging questions.
