When do I need to re-feed?

The nutrients in SYBASoil will run out in ~6 months on average.

We will advice you on the right fertiliser after doing our plant scan.

When do I repot?

We recommend repotting once any of these things happen:

  • You see roots growing out of the bottom of the pot
  • The soil dries very quickly between watering
  • The plant is top-heavy and wants to fall over
  • Roots are pushing the plant up and out of the container
  • Every 1 to 2 years

What can I expect when using your products?

94.2% of customers report visibly stronger roots& leaf growth within a few weeks.

You will also notice that watering becomes a lot easier due to having the right soil structure.

Why is the soil peat-free?

We don't think peat is so neat!

It becomes too compact over time, leading to a state where it no longer absorbs water.

That's why we opt for coconut fiber and worm castings, keeping your potting soil delightfully airy and usable for much longer. Much more environmentally friendly in its use & less CO2!

🌺 The Perfect Rhododendron Soil for Healthy Growth & Pretty Flowers

How Do I Use These Products for My Rhododendron?

Rhododendrons are stunning flowering shrubs known for their bold colors and lush foliage, but they’re also famously picky about their soil. That’s why starting with the right mix is key — and our Universal Mix provides just the right structure and balance for healthy root development and vibrant blooms.

To plant or repot a rhododendron, choose a pot with excellent drainage and fill the bottom with Universal Mix. Gently remove the plant from its current pot, loosen the roots, and place it in the center. Fill in around the root ball with more mix, pressing lightly to secure the plant. Water thoroughly until water drains out of the bottom.

Rhododendrons prefer consistently moist (but not soggy) conditions. Universal Mix holds moisture well without becoming compacted, which helps prevent the root suffocation that can often lead to stunted growth or yellowing leaves. This mix is suitable for container planting on balconies or patios, and it also works beautifully when used in garden beds for partial-shade locations.

How Does Universal Mix Work for Rhododendrons?

Rhododendrons require light, acidic, and well-draining soil to perform at their best. Universal Mix is carefully blended to create a root-friendly environment that mirrors these conditions. While it's not specifically labeled for acid-loving plants, its combination of organic materials and mineral structure makes it an excellent all-rounder — especially when paired with the right watering habits and location.

Worm castings deliver a slow-release supply of nutrients that supports flower formation and overall plant vitality without overwhelming sensitive roots. They also help naturally lower the soil pH slightly, which is beneficial for rhododendrons.

Coco coir acts as a sponge — it holds moisture close to the roots without creating wet, heavy conditions. This helps rhododendrons stay hydrated between waterings, especially during warmer months.

Perlite improves drainage and oxygen flow in the root zone. For a shallow-rooted plant like rhododendron, this is critical. It helps roots spread laterally and breathe properly.

Lava gravel adds structure and trace minerals to the mix. Its gritty texture creates pockets that further prevent compaction, and it slowly releases micronutrients that support long-term plant health.

Activated carbon filters out harmful substances from water or decaying matter, supporting healthier soil biology and reducing the risk of root stress.

Organic nutrients round out the blend, feeding your plant steadily over time — perfect for supporting flowering phases and leaf growth without creating a nutrient overload.

This combination creates a resilient, well-balanced soil that gives rhododendrons a strong, healthy base — even in container conditions where nutrient leaching is common.

The Original Habitat of Rhododendrons

Rhododendrons are native to cool, temperate forests and mountainous regions across Asia, particularly in the Himalayas, as well as parts of Europe and North America. In the wild, they thrive in slightly acidic, loose woodland soil that is rich in organic matter, shaded from direct sun, and naturally well-draining thanks to layers of decaying leaves and volcanic terrain.

These conditions are difficult to replicate in a typical garden setting — especially in containers — but the Universal Mix comes close. Its airy, humus-rich texture mimics the forest floor, while the mineral elements provide structure similar to the rocky terrain where many rhododendrons naturally grow.

By using a soil that reflects the plant’s native environment, you’re giving it a major head start — especially when combined with the right watering and care routines.

How to Care for Rhododendrons

Rhododendrons are rewarding plants when their basic needs are met, and good soil is only the beginning. Here’s how to help your plant thrive long after planting:

Light: Rhododendrons prefer dappled sunlight or partial shade. Avoid harsh, direct afternoon sun, especially in warmer climates, as it can scorch leaves and dry out the roots too quickly.

Watering: These plants like consistent moisture but dislike soggy conditions. Water deeply when the top few centimeters feel dry. During hot periods, increase watering frequency, especially for container-grown plants.

Feeding: During the growing season (spring to early summer), feed your rhododendron with a fertilizer formulated for acid-loving plants. Avoid overfeeding, as too much nitrogen can reduce flowering.

Pruning: After flowering, prune back spent blooms to encourage more growth. Lightly shaping the plant also improves airflow and reduces the chance of fungal issues.

Mulching: If planting outdoors, a layer of bark mulch helps retain soil moisture and protect the shallow root system from heat and cold.

Winter care: While many rhododendrons are cold-tolerant, young plants and potted specimens benefit from shelter or mulch during freezing periods.

Combined with our Universal Mix, these care tips will help your rhododendron settle in, develop strong roots, and reward you with bold blooms year after year — whether you're growing in pots or beds.
