The expert in soil
As our moss is harvested from natural environments on Dutch farms, it may contain twigs, sticks or insects.
Sphagnum moss is a soft, absorbent, and incredibly versatile organic substrate used for everything from propagation and terrariums to kokedama and hydroponic setups. Known for its impressive water-holding capacity, this moss locks in moisture while still allowing airflow, helping to maintain the perfect balance of hydration and ventilation in your soil or root zone.
At Sybotanica, our sphagnum moss comes ready to use—no soaking, no expansion, just clean, damp moss in its natural state. We package it in 3L bags or larger 36L nets, harvested locally and cut into long, flexible strands measuring 5–15 cm. It's ideal for a wide range of indoor gardening applications, and comes as close to “just harvested” as moss gets.
Sphagnum holds up to 20x its weight in water, slowly releasing moisture back to plants while preventing root rot. It also provides a gentle, sterile, and pest-resistant growing surface for delicate roots and cuttings. As a natural medium, it’s naturally anti-fungal and mold-resistant, making it a trusted choice for propagation and seed starting.
Because it’s an inorganic-free, organic material, sphagnum helps roots thrive in both high-humidity and low-nutrient environments without overwhelming them.
This product is one of the best materials available for propagation. Its fine structure cradles cuttings while maintaining constant moisture, making it perfect for rooting soft-stemmed plants, aroids, or more fragile specimens that struggle in coarser substrates.
You can use it in trays, wrap it around aerial roots for air layering, or stuff it into net pots for water propagation—it adapts easily to your propagation style and retains moisture without going soggy.
This natural mulch also shines in terrarium builds and specialty plant care. For orchids and epiphytes, it adds moisture stability to a bark-heavy mix, preventing dehydration without reducing airflow. In closed terrariums, it acts as a breathable buffer layer, helping to regulate humidity and reduce surface evaporation.
And for kokedama lovers—it’s a must. The moss binds easily, holds shape, and provides the perfect base for wrapping soil around roots and tying it into a functional, living sculpture.
Because our moss is harvested from natural environments on Dutch Farms, some twigs, sticks, or small organic material may be present—this is completely normal and a sign of its unprocessed origin.
At Sybotanica, we prefer our sphagnum moss the way nature made it: full of texture, rich in water-holding power, and minimally processed. We chose a local source to reduce environmental impact and ensure freshness, making this moss one of the most natural and low-waste soil ingredients in our lineup.
If you're looking for a clean, soft, and versatile sustainable moss to elevate your soil care or propagation practice, this is it.

Ready-to-use live Sphagnum moss. Versatile for growing medium, hydroponics, orchids, terrariums & more. Sphagnum is a natural product.

Why Sphagnum Moss for your plants?
Ready-to-use soil moistener and aeration improver
add 10-30% as a potting medium for orchids, Carnivorous plants or Terrariums
Perfect for moisture-loving roots who need aeration.
Natural, locally harvested moss, ready to use with long (5-15cm) strands and can quickly grow lush and green
Our Sphagnum moss is harvested from a local Dutch farm (one of the last in this country!) from a small boat, entirely by hand.
We visit this family-owned Sphagnum farm often. One of the main reasons we've been sourcing our Moss from this farm is their focus on protecting the natural habitat and the quality of the product.
During the summer months, the Sphagnum is mostly unavailable for harvest. This is due to multiple protected birds breeding in the area.

I am a beginner in the plant hobby and I feel as if Sybotanica made me skip many steps of trial and error. My plants have been loving their philodendron soil mix as well as their first moss pole (as shown in the video, I just chopped my plant some weeks ago and I feel as if it had started to grow again very quickly and I 100% think it to has to do with their good quality products). Would happily recommend! Also!!! It feels great to know the moss does not come from very far away! Supporting local produce is important!!!!!

This is by far the best moss, at the best price for your plants and moss poles, after cleaning it of a few roots and sticks, it is ready to use. Free of mold and nice long fibers. My plants love it <3

Spaghnum Moss has no set expiry date and will stay fresh for many years if stored properly. On average, a batch of Sphagnum can last 2+ years.
To expand the longevity of your moss, keep it slightly moist and in a bright location away from direct sunlight. Don't let the moss dry out completely; this will significantly shorten its lifespan. If you keep it too wet, it risks rotting.Make sure there is some airflow in the container to prevent rot & mould.
It may have an earthy, swampy smell. Sphagnum is a live product.Though, don't worry - as this is entirely normal. If stored correctly, moss should not develop nasty odors.Any harsh, foul smells can signify rot or fungal growth. If this occurs, your moss was likely not stored correctly.
In terms of usage, peat moss is used (and loved by many) for its soil properties. It does a great job at growing plants. Sphagnum mos is best used for growing cuttings & as an ammendment in certain soil species. Sphagnum and Peat moss belong to the same plant but are different products.
Peat moss is (partially) decomposed sphagnum moss. Sphagnum moss is the top layer of moss that grows on a swamp's surface. After harvesting, the plant will re-grow the sphagnum.
Harvesting sphagnum moss does not harm the ecosystem. It can restore afterwards. Peat moss, on the other hand, is the layer under swamps. It forms the basis for natural vegetation.
This layer of moss takes hundreds of years to form, making it a very unsustainable product. It does not renew itself easily and removing it poses a threat to the native flora and fauna. Have a different question? Check out our help center.
Our sphagnum moss is harvested locally in The Netherlands, which helps to reduce transport and ecological impacts. It naturally grows in swamps and peatlands. Sphagnum is quick to renew itself, making it a sustainable product.
We only harvest it in certain months, afterwards the ecosystem is left alone to restore. There are also certain bird species breeding there in summer, which block our harvesting.
